Gilberthorpe (as at 12/11/2007)

This is a story about the Gilberthorpe family of South Yorkshire. I didn't know where to start - so I started in the middle.

I have listed all my people under a single document showing all the names, locations and reference documents- see

Full List of Gilberthorpes

(There was a gentleman named Les Gilberthorpe who did a lot of work on the family some years ago, but seemed to have disappeared from the web - so I just got on and did my own thing. However I recently discovered an old archive site with some of his details still on there - http://web.archive.org/web/20010623050930/www.geocities.com/Heartland/Oaks/7033/ ) - Lol 16th Oct 2007

The Rotherham Gilberthorpes.

William Gilberthorpe (1785) was born in Conisboro but moved to the small village of Slade Hooton (sometimes referred to as being Brookhouse, and often referred to as Laughton) near Laughton-en-le-Morthen, Rotherham, Yorkshire, to marry Mary Robinson (1785)  in 1806.

William and Mary had many children, at least nine, and they became influential in establishing the Rotherham base of the Gilberthorpe family.

Thomas (1807) was the eldest, but he and wife, Mary seem to have produced just one daughter, Mary Ann (1851).

Elizabeth (1809) produced a son, Thomas Duke Gilberthorpe (1828) before marrying William Wales in 1831, and disappearing.

William (1814) had at least three children; William (1842), Richard (1848) and Elizabeth (1838) and established a farm at Herringthorpe.

Henry (1819) had at least nine children, who helped to form the Thorpe Hesley leg of the family.

Mary Ann (1821) like her sister Elizabeth, had a son out of wedlock, George (1842) before she later married John Greaves, and had several little Greaves babies, but for whatever reasons young George remained a Gilberthorpe and went on to form the Bradgate leg of the family.

At this stage I know little of the other children of William and Mary other than their names and dates; Charlotte (1828), Charles (1827), Harriot (1823) and Richard (1816). This is more down to the limited time available, rather than any difficulties encountered.

The Other Gilberthorpe Families.

Conisbrough - The original birthplace of William (1785), where there were many Gilberthorpes, appears to have died out.

Chesterfield - Primarily a family of confectioners, started by George around 1800, with some link to the river Trent.

Barnsley - This is something of a puzzle. At least two families, each started by a William Gilberthorpe around 1800.

Doncaster - a family started by a stray Gilberthorpe from Braithwell, marrying a Fitzgeorge, and suffering more than their share of tragedy.

Tickhill - a couple of families who are proving difficult to match.

Bolton -a curious record of a family started from a stray who probably came from Tickhill, but who seemed very keen to hide his identity.

Handsworth - an interesting record of George who originated in Handsworth and his two sons, who owned Grange farm, near Thorpe Hesley, but then sold up and dispersed to places as far afield as the Isle of Man

Barlow - a small collection of records probably relating to just one stray lady and her two sons.

Burghwallis - a family who have retained the older spelling of the name Gilverthorp
